Shopify vs a Custom Online Store: What Should a Canadian Business Choose?

For most new stores, Shopify is the right choice. But some businesses sell in a way a template can't handle. Here's how to tell which one you are.

Should You Use Shopify or Build a Custom Store?

For most new stores, start with Shopify. It’s quick to launch, it handles the basics well, and you can test whether people will buy before you spend heavily.

Consider a custom store when the way you sell doesn’t fit a template, or when monthly fees and workarounds start costing more than owning your own system.

How Do They Compare?

On cost, Netclues listed Shopify’s plans as of mid-2025 at $49 a month for Basic, $132 for Grow and $517 for Advanced, in Canadian dollars. Check Shopify’s own site for current prices. Paid apps and themes can add a lot to that.

For custom builds, Impeka lists a typical e-commerce range of $10,000 to $60,000 or more, and Netclues puts a basic build at $5,000 to $20,000 CAD.

When Is Shopify the Right Choice?

  • You’re starting out and want to prove that people will buy
  • You sell ordinary products with standard shipping
  • You want to manage the store without a developer
  • Your budget is limited
  • You want to launch quickly

Most stores never outgrow it, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

When Does a Custom Store Make Sense?

  • You don’t sell at a fixed price. Trade pricing, customer-specific prices or quote-based selling can be awkward on a template.
  • Your products are configured or made to order. Complex options often need custom logic.
  • Your delivery rules are unusual. Local delivery zones, booked time slots or installation can outgrow standard settings.
  • You need deep links to your own systems. Think inventory, accounting or production.
  • App fees keep growing. If you’re paying for many apps to cover what you need, a custom system may cost less over time.

What Does a Real Custom Store Look Like?

LastPrice is a store I designed and built from scratch for kitchen and home appliances in Accra. It went custom for one reason: the way it sells doesn’t fit a standard checkout.

The checkout takes no payment. The customer orders, the item is delivered, and they pay by mobile money after looking at it. Each order number doubles as the payment reference, customers choose a delivery day and time window, and every product card shows the delivery cost before they commit.

You could force that into a template, but it would fight you at every step. That’s the question to ask: would you be working with the platform, or against it?

What Should Canadian Stores Check Either Way?

  • Sales tax: GST, HST, PST and QST depend on the province, so set up tax with your accountant’s help
  • Shipping: Show the cost before checkout, because surprises lose sales
  • Currency: Show Canadian dollars clearly
  • Privacy and email: Follow the rules in my compliance checklist
  • French: Plan for it if you sell into Quebec
  • Your data: Make sure you can export your products, customers and orders

How Can I Help?

Tell me what you sell, and I’ll send you a free store plan with an honest answer: Shopify or custom, what it would take, and a rough cost. If Shopify is the right answer, I’ll say so.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shopify good for Canadian businesses?

Yes, for most small stores. It’s a Canadian company, it’s quick to set up, and it handles common needs well. Check that your tax setup and shipping rates suit your provinces.

How much does a custom online store cost in Canada?

Published Canadian ranges start around $5,000 to $20,000 CAD for a basic build, and a typical range at one Ottawa studio is $10,000 to $60,000 or more.

Can I move from Shopify to a custom store later?

Yes. Products, customers and orders can be exported and moved, and redirects keep your search rankings. Many businesses start on Shopify and move only when they have a clear reason.

Do I own my store on Shopify?

You own your brand, products and customer data, but you rent the platform. With a custom store, you own the code as well.
